Delete Storage
Persistent Storage, powered by Backblaze, is in Beta. Account owners and admins can join under Settings → Profile, or by ticking Join the beta program at signup. They can leave it the same way, under Settings → Profile. See Overview.
Deleting storage permanently deletes every file in it. This can't be undone.
How to delete
- Open Storage in the sidebar.
- Click the trash icon on the storage's row.
- Confirm.
With the REST API, send DELETE /api/v1/storage-volumes/{id}.
Why a delete is refused
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| "This storage is attached to ... Stop those instances and detach it under My Instances → Storage, or terminate them. Stopped instances count too." | Stop each instance listed under Attached to and detach the storage under My Instances > Storage, or terminate those instances. Then delete again. |
| "You can't delete storage in a group you don't manage." | Ask an owner or admin, or someone who manages that group. |
| "Storage not found." | It was already deleted, or moved to a group you can't see. Reload the Storage page. |
| "Emptying the storage failed part-way. Delete again to retry; contact support if it keeps failing." | Delete again. If it keeps failing, contact support. |
If there is no trash icon on the row, you don't have the Manage persistent storage permission, or you don't manage the storage's instance group. Ask an owner or admin.
Attached to on the Storage page lists every instance that holds the storage. Stopped instances are marked (stopped). The refusal message names the instances you can see. Instances in groups you can't see are counted ("and 1 instance you can't see"), not named. You can't detach from those, or from instances in groups you can see but don't manage: ask an owner or admin, or someone who manages those groups.
Large storage takes more than one pass
Large storage can take several passes to empty.
- Website: you see "Still emptying the storage" with the number of files removed so far. The storage shows Deleting (delete again to finish). Click delete again until it says "Storage deleted."
- REST API:
202withdeleted: falsemeans it is still emptying. Send the same request again until you get200withdeleted: true. Repeating it is safe.
You are billed for whatever is still stored until the storage is fully deleted. See Pricing and Billing.
