Sharing and Permissions

Persistent Storage, powered by Backblaze, is in Beta. Account owners and admins can join under Settings → Profile, or by ticking Join the beta program at signup. They can leave it the same way, under Settings → Profile. See Overview.

Limits

  • Up to 8 storage mounts per instance. The Deploy picker and the Storage window on My Instances stop you at 8, and the API refuses more than 8.
  • One instance at a time. Attach each storage to one instance at a time.

Attaching the same storage to more than one instance at the same time isn't supported and can corrupt your data. Every mount is read-write, and there is no file locking between instances. Attach each storage to one instance at a time: stop the instance that has it and detach it before you attach it to another.

Storage belongs to the account

Storage is shared across your team. Anyone on the account who can manage storage in the storage's group can attach it, delete it, and read or change everything in it.

Instance groups

All storage sits in an instance group, the same as instances. The group controls who can see and use it.

To...You need
See storage on the Storage pageAccess to see its group
Attach storage at deployPermission to launch instances, and manage access to the storage's group and to the group the instance is deployed into
Attach or detach storage on an existing instanceThe Manage persistent storage permission, and manage access to the storage's group and to the instance's group
Create storageThe Manage persistent storage permission, and manage access to the group it goes into
Delete storageThe Manage persistent storage permission, and manage access to its group
Move storage to another groupThe Manage persistent storage permission, and manage access to both groups
  • New storage goes into the group you pick when you create it, or into the default group.
  • To move storage, change its Group on the Storage page. The group menu shows when you can manage more than one group.
  • If storage is attached to instances in groups you can't see, the Storage page counts them ("+1 you can't see") but doesn't name them.
  • On My Instances, the Storage window counts storage in groups you can't see toward the 8 ("And 1 more in groups you can't see.") but doesn't name them.

The Manage persistent storage permission

Set it per member under Settings > Team. See Team: Roles.

RoleDefault
OwnerOn
AdminOn
MemberOff. An owner or admin can turn it on.

Attaching storage at deploy doesn't need this permission. It needs manage access to the storage's group. Attaching or detaching on an existing instance, from My Instances, does need it.
